Steady-state multiplicity in the autohumidi$cation polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell

چکیده
“Ignition/extinction” phenomena and steady-state multiplicity were discovered in an autohumidi$cation polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell. At steady state, the water produced by the fuel cell reaction is balanced by water removal by the 7owing reactant gas streams. Ignition, corresponding to a high fuel cell current, arises from positive feedback between the water produced by the reaction and the transport of protons in the membrane. A critical level of membrane hydration is required for ignition; insu:cient membrane hydration will extinguish the fuel cell current. This new autocatalytic mechanism has an interesting analogy to the autothermal reactor. ? 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Effect of CO in the reformatted fuel on the performance of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) fuel cell
There are several obstacles to the commercialization of PEM fuel cells. One of the reasons is that the presence of carbon monoxide (CO) in the reformatted fuel, even at a very small scale, decreases the fuel cell performance. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of CO in reformatted fuel on PEM fuel cell performance. For this purpose, a steady state, one-dimensional and non-isoth...
متن کاملDynamics of Autohumidifed PEM Fuel Cell Operation
Start-up and dynamic responses to changes in load are reported for a dry feed, autohumidified polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell PEMFC . The fuel cell current can be ignited by water injection; criteria are derived for the required water injection as functions of fuel cell size, temperature, and reactant feed rates. Steady-state multiplicity is observed where the fuel cell current can be ei...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Non-Uniform Gas Diffusion Layer Porosity Effect on Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell Performance
Gas diffusion layers are essential components of proton exchange membrane fuel cell since the reactants should pass through these layers. Mass transport in these layers is highly dependent on porosity. Many of simulations have assumed, for simplicity, the porosity of GDL is constant, but in practice, there is a considerable variation in porosity along gas diffusion layers. In the present study ...

One of the important goals of this research is the investigation of the variation of bipolar plates width effect on the fuel cell performance compared with the conventional m...
متن کاملThe effect of increasing the multiplicity of flow fields contact surface on the performance of PEM fuel cell
In this paper, three innovative 3-D geometries for flow fields of cathode and anode have been developed to investigate the comparative impact of increasing the multiplicity of the involved anode-cathode channel surface contact on the efficiency of electrochemical reaction via the same membrane electrode assembly (MEA) active area. In the introduced new models, each anode channel includes two, t...
